When the Gates Opened Again
The return of travelers to Bhutan carries an echo of history. It quietly reminds us of 1974, when the very first group of international tourists entered our country through Phuentsholing. That moment marked the beginning of Bhutan’s careful relationship with global travel—one built on curiosity, respect, and restraint. Today, as our borders open once more, it feels like we are standing at a similar threshold. A fresh beginning, shaped this time by experience and resilience.
Much has changed since then, and even more has changed since the pandemic. With the lessons of COVID-19 still close to our hearts, Bhutan has revised its travel policies with care and foresight. Updated tourism regulations, health protocols, and sustainable travel frameworks now guide our reopening. These changes are not meant to restrict joy—but to protect it. They reflect Bhutan’s commitment to welcoming guests responsibly, without compromising the safety of our people or our visitors.
To our future guests, we say this with warmth and sincerity: it is safe to travel to Bhutan. Our systems are in place, our communities are prepared, and our hearts are open. At the same time, we gently ask you to travel with awareness. Be mindful, be respectful, and be patient with the small adjustments that come with a world still finding its rhythm again. Vigilance today is not a burden—it is a shared kindness.
There is something incredibly moving about seeing travelers return—about watching suitcases roll through quiet terminals again and seeing that familiar mix of wonder and relief on people’s faces when they finally arrive. It reminds us why we do what we do.
Just like in 1974, when Bhutan cautiously stepped into the world of tourism, today we step forward again—wiser, humbled, and hopeful. The gates have opened. The roads are calling. And the journey, once more, begins.
